The Emotional Body of Menopause
Symptoms of the menopause tend to start sooner than you think, either it be the slow shifts in mood, cycles or repetitive symptoms such as migraines or palpitations. I was treated by an excellent herbalist for a repetitive symptom myself and was surprised by how long I had been unwell for or rather how long had been experiencing the perimenopause. Acknowledging the start of your menopause transition can feel like a relief, if not a little trepidatious.
What About How I Feel?
There are many books, blogs and podcasts that give great information in supporting the physical symptoms and experience of the menopause, with science and studies, names of hormonal fluctuations and natural or prescribed remedies that can help. This new world of knowledge was good for gathering information but not great for what I was feeling.
Surprised
As a healthcare professional, I was surprised at how unaware I was of what to expect and subsequently experienced at the beginning of my menopausal process. I was also shocked at the lack of information, on the emotional challenges that arise during this time. Very few publications and people in the main stream media are talking about this phase of life and how it affects a woman to her very core.
I Am More Than Hot Flushes
The menopausal transition is not just about the physical conditions such as hot flushes, brain fog and insomnia but really is about the emotional weight of aging and entering into a new phase of life. As women in our society we tend to be valued and relevant for our youthful looks and our fertility.
Aging & Midlife
Aging can feel as though it accelerates during this transition with changes to our weight, hair and skin, We often don’t speak of the bare truth of the fear, shame, resistance and the feeling that we are utterly out of control of our aging bodies.
Between the ages of 45 to 55 most menstruating women will enter into their menopausal process, a metamorphosis of sorts. This is a reckoning that will see the lifting of the oestrogenic veil and a death of her much familiar identification of the woman she is supposed to be, to the awakening of her unique, essence.
